When the skies darken and November gales kick up 20-foot waves on Lake Superior, Kitchi-gami (“Great Sea” in Ojibwe) becomes one of the world’s most dangerous bodies of water. Ships must find safe harbor or sink. “The lake, they say, never abandons its dead”, as Gordon Lightfoot so aptly sang in “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. The Mataafa storm of November 27-28, 1905 claimed the lives of 36 sailors from 29 wrecked ships, including the schooner Madeira, which sank on the rocks of Silver Bay, Minnesota. The decision was taken to erect a lighthouse near the site to guide future navigators. Perched on a 133-foot-high cliff, Split Rock Lighthouse, first lit on July 31, 1910, immediately became a tourist attraction and remains to this day one of the most picturesque and visited lighthouses in the United States.
The Ugears Split Rock Lighthouse Model is a beautiful DIY wooden reproduction of Minnesota’s iconic lighthouse, with its octagonal tower and adjoining keeper’s house, and joins the Alexandria Lighthouse in the Ugears Lighthouses of the World collection. With its warm LED light, powered either by USB-C (via phone charging) or three AA batteries, the model also serves as a functional nightlight for your home, office or child’s bedroom. On the side of the picturesque house, near the base, you’ll find the charging port and an on/off switch. The batteries are easily replaced from their tray on the underside of the model, while the LED light can also be easily replaced if required by turning and removing the dome from the tower.
Made of artistic-grade 3 mm composite wood, the model measures 19.8 х 24 х 11.6 cm, the ideal size for a bedside table. The janitor’s house and tower are pierced with windows, while the house features a fireplace and stepped entrance. Laser engraving on the exterior surfaces reproduces the look of stone and brick. In addition to the removable cupola, the door to the gatekeeper’s house opens and closes with a rubber-band mechanism, and the gatekeeper’s house windows feature curtains that swing open when tilted.
The Split Rock Lighthouse is a 295-piece “intermediate” model that promises over 6 hours of construction. The kit includes natural wood composite parts in pre-cut laser boards, electrical components, an LED light, plus a piece of sandpaper and wax to smooth and lubricate the parts. You won’t need glue or special tools to assemble your Split Rock headlight. Simply detach the parts from the boards, then snap them together following the illustrated step-by-step instructions in 11 languages (English, German, Ukrainian, French, Polish, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, Chinese and Korean). Make sure all electrical components are working properly before proceeding. Once finished, you can admire your charming creation and the warm glow it lends to any room, and imagine the life of a lighthouse keeper on a windswept cliff along the shores of Lake Superior.
